Church today
As Dr. Mark Cartledge is leaving the University soon, today's service was partly one to thank him for his time with us all. Dr. Mark's a charismatic low church person, but he still managed to fit into the Chapel life, performing the odd midday Eucharist, and although you could tell he was from a different tradition, he managed quite well. Today was his last service with us, and so he got to give the sermon, and choose a few hymns (I did think it odd when a different hymn book was used, and was dreading having something as ghastly as 'shine Jesus, shine' - thank goodness we didn't!). In the sermon, he elaborated on how he chose the hymns, flicking through one of his evo hymn books, and almost going for one with the simply cringe inducing title "Jesus, drop-kick me through the goal posts of your love", and one with the central theme being how God is bigger than a submarine, and stronger than a tiger - the horror! the horror!
In the end, it wasn't too bad, but for some reason recently, the thurible hasn't been giving off enough incense for my liking, however, the 'fruit of the vine' wasn't too bad a sherry today, so we've got something to be thankful for (for most of the term, the chapel's been using up a large stock of sherries left to it by someone's mother - some have been rather off in my honest opinion...).
